What they do provide is a clear signal that the room is occupied and a way to keep the door from sliding open on its own. That's what this latch does.

The Goldberg Brothers privacy latch is a paddle-style mortise latch. The paddle sits flush in a routed recess on the door or wall; push the bottom and it rotates out to catch a strike plate on the opposite surface, holding the door closed.
